Ellie Geyer ’25 and Jane Downing ’25, the Associated Students of Roosevelt (ASR) president and vice-
president, plan to improve student and staff quality at Roosevelt High School by representing student and staff voices. “[Geyer and I] are in the ASR room three class periods out of the day. If anyone needs anything, we highly encourage you come talk to us,” Downing said.
Since her campaign focus on parking last year, Geyer is continuing to focus on improving accessibility to stu-
dent parking around Roosevelt. “[Student parking] is not something that I’ve forgotten about…[and] I’m trying to work with other neighboring parking lots… and getting meetings with the City of Seattle,” Geyer said.
To support students and staff during lunch, Geyer and Downing are starting to incorporate inclusive activities at Roosevelt. So far, Geyer and Downing have helped plan lunchtime activities, such as
the Sugar + Spoon ice cream truck and the students vs. staff basketball game.
“You should learn [at school], but you should also be having fun in the place you have to spend five days a
week. And that’s why we’re planning activities like lunchtime activities… [in addition to] spirit weeks, and assemblies,” Downing stated. “This year, we’re really trying to bring back events and build our community so that more people know each other,” Geyer added.
In addition to incorporating lunchtime activities, Geyer and Downing are organizing club registration with directions on how to register. “Last year, it was kind of confusing as to how clubs could register and how you could be an actual club that has meetings. But this year, we have a lot of instructions on how to do that,” Geyer said.
Besides focusing on student and staff needs, Geyer and Downing are reshaping the ASR class environment. “What ASR does reflects on the rest of the school… So, we’re really trying to make sure that
ASR is a community in itself,” said Geyer. Reflecting on past school years, Geyer and Downing are encouraging students in ASR to always be working on projects.
“We have a Google document with an agenda for every day and [we’re] making
sure that stuff happens,” Downing said, and added, “This year [students are ad-
vised to] create an event… [and students should] be working on something.”
