As the new school year began, so did fall sports. And the Roosevelt athletics program has been on a roll all around.
As of October 29 the girls soccer team is 11-2-1. Coming off a state championship victory, they look to continue their dominance, with Captain Avery O’Donnell ’25 saying, “The goal is another state championship. Our team is amazing this year, so much talent in the attacking third but we really hold it down on defense too. We could definitely win it again.”
The volleyball team has playoffs to look forward to, but other than that, the season has been underwhelming. However, they have had fun and set the stage for a good future. Clara Swanson ’25 said, “our team has suffered some losses this year, but we’re going strong. We’re a really tight-knitted team, very bonded together. We’re a good team with a lot of talented players, and the future is looking bright.”
The golf team has been as dominant as ever. The boys, led by Captain Caelan Wobbrock ’25, are 11-0 in their matches which makes them 1st in Metro League and 2nd in the state. The girls have been just as good, boasting a record of 10-1, making them 1st in Metro League and 6th in the state. They are led by Captain Reese Jenkins ’25. Dante Veretto ’25 is especially confident in the team. “Our season was great. We won Metros, qualified for state which is in the spring. We’ll be ready for it then and we’ve got a shot. Job’s not finished.”
The men’s ultimate frisbee team has reached new heights this season, winning the first Metro championship in men’s program history and even securing a spot in nationals, another first for the program. Captain Lucas Terzic ’25 says, “we’re the best team in the league, we have this goal to win every single possible title.” Spirits are high as they get closer to state finals, the end goal being to win nationals in June.
Cross country has been performing above their standards. Captain Kai Davey ’25 is proud of how they performed overall. “We had something like 54 PR’s (personal records) and season records, which is pretty crazy for a 120 person team. And for the first time in a while both the girls and the boys varsity team made it to districts. So that’s really cool and I’ll be rooting for them.”
Slowpitch softball has a bright future. “We had 10 freshmen join and many people had little to no experience, and they got so much better throughout the year. So I definitely think in the next couple of years we’re gonna be winning a lot more and there’s a lot to look forward to,” said Marie McCook ’25. “We built a really great welcoming team environment that I’m very proud of.”
The water polo team is hopeful as playoffs roll around. “We’re in D2 [Division 2] right now so we’ve been beating teams by like 20 plus points. We’ve been having to go left handed for most of the second half. And we’ve just been working on the fundamentals so when we play in D1 for state we’re ready to compete,” said Luca Ozretich ’27.
The swim team had a rough start but they picked it right back up. Finley McIntosh ’25 said, “we’re on to Metros now and we’re getting a lot of personal best times, which is really great to see.”
Overall, our sports teams at Roosevelt have been very impressive, showcasing the talent and determination within the school’s athletic program.
