On a Tuesday morning at 8:00am, while most students were waking up for school, the Roosevelt girls golf team were teeing off to make history. On April 6 at the Jefferson Park Golf Course, the Roosevelt girls’ golf team won their first Metro Championship since 1997.
Roosevelt Golf Coach Christopher Rose says, “It was another beautiful day for golf, minus the sanded and punched greens, and our girls took advantage.”
Senior and golf captain Hannah Elaimy finished with a 75, winning third in the individual bracket overall. Katie Thorson and Olivia Kelley came in next with an 87 and 88. The pressure landed on Ryan Jansen for another 88 to win it. Unknowingly, Jansen drained a 20 foot putt for the win. Jansen added up her score, saying, “That was for an 88!” Rose claims that “the crowd went wild – well at least eight of us.”
The girls team finished with an undefeated 7-0 season, as well as becoming Metro Champions. Rose reports that after this season, over the seven years he has been coach, the girls and boys team have a tied record for 59 wins and 12 losses. The Roosevelt girls golf team is now back on the map after 24 years.
