The Roosevelt dance team has gone through multiple changes since last year. From genre expansions to new members, the dance team has truly transformed.
Kendall Rogers ’26 is a new member on this year’s team. When asked about what it is like to be a new dancer on the team, she said, “To be a new member, it actually feels fantastic.” She continued, “I’ve been in other dance groups that have not been nearly as welcoming or easy to feel a part of or get back into the fold. But with dance team, the returners, the older kids are so welcoming, like they’re so eager to help you with anything.”
Our dance team has also begun competing with more dance styles. The team’s main style has always been hip hop, but last year, they began to expand their repertoire. Sivan Green ’24, a co-captain this year, recalled how the team was introduced to more styles, “We were seeing all these other teams compete in multiple categories. So I was like, I wanna compete in multiple categories.”
Green continued, “So with the help of me and a few other of the older teammates, we went to talk to our coach. By junior year, we were competing in jazz and hip hop.”
The dance team is looking forward to going to nationals in February. This will take place in Orlando, Florida to continue their competition season. They are also excited to organize more fundraiser events like “dance-a-grams”, where one can pay to have them go to a class and perform a short dance routine for the person of their choice.
When asked about the reasoning behind these fundraisers, Sivan said, “We have to pay to go to competitions … there’s an entry fee maybe like $1000. And then this year we’re going to nationals, that’s going to cost a lot of money.” The team is looking forward to what is in store for them this 2023-2024 season.
