As the 2024 summer came to an end, Seattle’s Sound Transit opened the Lynnwood Link Extension to the 1 Line, which includes four new stations. The extension opened to the public on August 30, 2024. The 1 Line, also known as Central Link, opened on July 18, 2009, with 2 stations stretching from Westlake to Tukwila International Boulevard. It has since grown substantially, with a current total of 23 stations, and more to come.
With the addition of four new stations – Lynnwood City Center, Mount-
lake Terrace, Shoreline North/185th, and Shoreline South/148th – people have easier access to places such as Alderwood Mall, Sky Zone Trampoline Park, and Jackson Park Golf Course.
Ella Miksis ’27 finds the light rail helpful, stating, “The light rail gets you to school a lot faster, and it comes every five or seven minutes, so it’s really consistent[…]it makes it a lot easier for people to get to places.”
Miksis looks forward to the Lynnwood extension and said, “I’m happy about it, because if I were to go to Lynnwood now, which I do, I can get there easier.”
Ana Kublashvili ’27 often takes the light rail as well. When Kublashvili first heard about the new stations, she felt excited, “Because now I can get Crumbl Cookie faster.” Kublashvili finds the new Lynnwood Link Extension helpful. “ [It] will really help people who work in Lynnwood and need a mode of transportation[…]also for students who want to do some shopping.”
Karis James ’27 doesn’t take the light rail very often, but finds it convenient. “I mostly take it for football games on Fridays at night around 7pm,” she explained, “It gets me from place to place quickly and it’s easy for me to drop off a car somewhere and hop on the train instead of driving through traffic.”
James thinks, “it will help others in Seattle, allowing people to transport further, making it easier for them, and helping the environment using less fuel and gas.” As for future Sound Transit plans, the 2 Line or “East Link Extension” will extend to the Redmond and South Bellevue population in 2025. The 2 Line will help residents across Lake Washington get easy access to Seattle’s stations.
