Over the past few weeks, a caravan of asylum seekers have been heading towards the U.S
border, carrying the dreams of thousands along with it. What started in Honduras has traveled
through Guatemala and Mexico, in hopes of reaching the U.S border to start a new chapter, away
from violence, poverty, and other challenges these people have faced.
According to US Vice President Mike Pence, this caravan is being funded by the
Venezuelan government. To add, thousands more in Latin America have been assisting by
equipping travelers with everything from clothes to ice cream. With all this support, the caravan
may have seemed unstoppable. There would be nothing in the way to stop these people from
reaching their dreams. On the other hand, President Trump had another idea in mind, which
would soon burst this bubble of hope.
On November 25th, a group of Central Americans trying to cross the U.S border were
attacked with tear gas and possibly even rocks. Among this groups were many families and
young children who authorities claim were crossing the border “violently.” Nearly 100 migrants
have been deported from Mexico, and 42 who had crossed the border have been arrested.
Sophomore Sophia Moran feels personally affected, as many of her family is from Latin
America, “none of the illegal immigrants want to cross illegally, it’s literally their last option.”
Many crossing the border were hoping their long journey and perseverance may touch President
Trump’s heart, but apparently even that wouldn’t change their fate.
Circumstances have gotten to the point where many have called it quits, but the story
doesn’t end there. More asylum seekers are still on their way and there is no way of knowing
what will happen next. Until now, all there can be done is to wait and hope for the best.
