Voting in the 2024 US presidential election is concluding today. The major party candidates are former President Donald Trump and current Vice President Kamala Harris. While there is much speculation and uncertainty about the social and political consequences of the election, the candidates have taken some clear positions on what they would do in office. Here’s a look at the policy plans each has announced should they be the winner.

Economics

Harris’ plans include: raising the minimum wage, introducing a $2,000 cap on out-of -pocket costs for medical care, restoring the child tax credit, and implementing paid family and medical leave. Trump plans to cut taxes for workers, boost manufacturing and support supply chains to create jobs, and implement baseline tariffs (taxes on goods imported from another country).

Foreign Policy

Harris plans to use wartime authority (includes the power to organize troops) to build stronger domestic mineral supply chains to help our troops. She supports Israel’s right to defend itself and ending the war in Gaza. Trump calls for a four year reshoring plan to stop American reliance on China for essential medicine and national security goods (55% of American-bought goods are Chinese made). He also proposed the Trump Reciprocal Trade Act, which gives countries two choices: ban all tariffs they have for America or be charged a higher tariff.

Immigration

Harris supports the recent bipartisan immigration bill and plans to put more funding into technology to detect illegal drugs transferring across the southern border. Trump plans to eliminate asylum fraud, deputize the National Guard and local police to deport illegal immigrants, and institute a merit based immigration system (eligibility to immigrate would be determined by whether a person is able to score above a set number of points based on certain qualifications).

Human Rights

Harris wants to double resources for the Department of Justice, invest in law enforcement, ban assault weapons and high capacity gun magazines, require universal background checks for purchasing a gun, and provide support to red flag laws. She also plans to restore Roe v. Wade, and pass the Equality Act to protect LGBTQIA+ people. Trump proposes to deliver record funding to first responders and increase penalties for assault of law enforcement. He also plans to ban federal agencies from censoring speech, pass a digital bill of rights, and cut federal funding for Critical Race Theory in public schools.

Climate Change

Harris proposes to lower household energy costs, create millions of jobs by investing in clean energy, and modernize traditional industries like steel and coal. Trump’s energy policy includes unleashing domestic energy resource production in order to drop gas prices. He also supports eliminating the Green New Deal and leaving the Paris Climate Accords.
