Which Fall Holiday is Best? Thanksgiving or Halloween?

Thanksgiving is the best holiday!
by Alex Dammand

In my family, Thanksgiving begins with watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The large floats are a perfect, festive start to the holiday. I mean what other fall holiday has an annual parade?

Over the years, Thanksgiving has been celebrated for the purpose of togetherness and sharing a table with family and friends, whether that be a traditional Thanksgiving dinner or a potluck of foods for a Friendsgiving.

Unlike Halloween, people travel from different parts of the country to celebrate the things and the people in their lives for which they are most grateful. Everyone has their own special ways of celebrating, whether that be through their culture or the type of food they bring to their Thanksgiving dinner — not everyone serves turkey.

It’s also a time to reflect and laugh on the years prior with stories from different generational perspectives. Getting to hear the same beloved story from a relative each year but still laughing each time.

Other enjoyable aspects of Thanksgiving include watching Thanksgiving specials, like “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” or Thanksgiving episodes of your favorite TV shows, like the “Gilmore Girls” episode where they rush to attend their various Thanksgiving events.

Much of the fall season is focused on the beauty around us: rust colored leaves, bright orange pumpkins (without the scary faces), and the crisp air with light rain, and only partially do we think about the spookiness surrounding Halloween.

Great friends and family, yummy food, and overall cozy fall atmosphere makes Thanksgiving the best fall holiday.

Halloween is far better, no debate.

Autumn is a wonderful season. The leaves are changing, the pumpkin patches are open, Starbucks has Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and who could forget the best fall holiday, Halloween.

If we’re talking about Halloween, of course we have to start with the media: iconic slasher movies with even more iconic killers, thrillers, and too many sequels to count. Don’t forget other Halloween-y movies or shows, like “Hocus Pocus,” or “Over the Garden Wall” that get you into the Halloween mood without making you scream, so they’re perfect for horror lovers and haters alike. And how could you forget the music?

If that’s not enough to thrill you, there’s always more. Haunted houses vary from “pass out in a friend’s arms”  horrifying to “this was made for children,” so you can find one for any level of adrenaline junkie or scared friend.

Plus, even if you’re too old for it now, trick-or-treating is a blast! A late night out with no parents, friends, AND candy?? It was something everyone looked forward to. Even if you’re not trick-or-treating this year, you can still dress up, hang out with friends, go to a party, watch Halloween movies, eat copious amounts of candy, or just stay out some unholy hour!

Whether you’re going out, staying in, or giving candy out to trick-or-treaters, it’s still a good time. Thanksgiving may have family and food, but Halloween has friends, candy, and great times all from the comfort of your neighborhood (and away from the kitchen).
